Discovering the Identity Factor

THE IDENTITY FACTOR

Since the Fall, people have been searching for who they are and why they exist. The answer to these questions can only be found in: first, knowing the One in whose image we were created (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) – second, how He uniquely fashion us individually – third, how we are to live and interact as His family together on earth.

Throughout the Bible, God’s nature and identity is known not just by His acts, but by His names: Elohim, Adonai, Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah-Shalom, Jehovah-Nissi, El-Roi, El-Olam, and the myriad other names that reveal His nature. He is the: God of Hope, God of Glory, God is love, God is Light, and He is a consuming fire.

In fact, there are over 700 divine names in Scripture that tell us who He is. Intimately knowing His name (His nature) is the revelation we need for life transformation. It fills us with the liberating, empowering truth of the One who made us, and in doing so, it rescues us from stumbling over our own faulty ideas or others’ opinions about Him.

Why is this important? Because to know who we are, we need to know who our Father is, and the DNA that runs through our spiritual veins.

The New Testament reveals the nature of the Son (Jesus) who is the exact image of the Father. As we grow in relationship with Jesus, we also grow in knowing the Father. God’s Fatherhood in our life is the foundation and wellspring of our identity.

As the children of God in Christ, our spiritual nature carries the same spiritual DNA as the Son. 1 John 4:17 says, “As He [Jesus] is, so are we in this world.” No wonder Jesus gave us the commission to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, and cleanse lepers. The Kingdom given Him by the Father to release heaven on earth is now what we are to do – it is part of our identity as the children of God. Jesus not only said that He is the Light, but that WE (in Him) are the light.

giftBut that’s not all. Created in God’s image means we each have all kinds of gifts – spiritual gifts, natural talents, motivational gifts and temperament, passion to do good, and unique personality…all given for a purpose. We are “wired” in such a way in our identity to be a “supply” for giving and edifying others. Each element of our nature is a shining facet of God from whom we have our being. That in itself is a grand journey of discovery.

So if you want to know who you are – start with studying the nature of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then stop and take the time to find out the beautiful strengths He has placed in you for the mission He has called you to do.

Below are a few truths from God’s Word about who you are in Jesus as God’s child. When you read His Word you will find many more.

These powerful truths are the authentic identity intended to be the reality by which we live.

If you have never had the opportunity of receiving Jesus into your life, He invites you to do so now.  When you receive Him into your heart and life and accept Him as your Lord and Savior, He will breathe the breath of life into you by the Holy Spirit. He will make you a truly new creation as a child of God, born of His Spirit.

Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to rescue me from the darkness of separation from You. Thank You that Jesus is now bringing me into the light of Your love. I have lived for myself and have been separate from You. Forgive me as I turn to You with all my heart to become Your child.

Jesus, I receive You as the Lord of my life. Wash me clean from everything that has been dirty in my life. Give me a new heart and make me a new creation in You as I surrender my life to You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ Name, so be it.

Spiritual Growth

As a new born child of God, you must feed that new life inside you. You do so by building relationship: Talk to your Abba Father. Talk to Jesus. Talk to the Holy Spirit. Listen to what They speak to you. Read The Bible – it will teach you His heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you as you read. Seek out other believers and get into relationship with them. God is a God of relationship! They will encourage you. Ask Jesus to connect you with the right people for you.
